Walk of Justice

Yesterday, the Bar Council-sponsored march `walk of justice` were held at Palace of Justice Putrajaya vicinity. The objectives is to give a memo to the Cabinet calling for the setting up of a Royal Commission to investigate issues jeopardising the Judiciary and this also reflects the denial of acceptance to the Government effort to setup an independent 3 men panels to clear the air. But who is actually Bar Council?

Bar Council actually a govern bodies represent legal practitioners in Malaysia. They has 36 council members, out of whom 12 are elected and the rest are two members from each state Bar committee. The 36 members serve for a one-year term and among them elect the president, vice president, secretary and treasurer of the council who serve a maximum two terms of one year each. The following are the post for the terms of 2007/2008,

Ambiga Sreenevasan (President)

Mr. Ragunath Kesavan (Vice-President)

Mr. Lim Chee Wee (Secretary)

Mr. George Varughese (Treasurer)

Mr. Yeo Yang Poh (Immediate Past President).

Our BAR Council also doesn`t go off the news spotlight for the following issues;

Apostasy- The Bar Council supports the minority judgment of Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Richard Malanjum that no court or authority should be easily allowed to have implied powers to curtail rights that are constitutionally granted which is in favour of the defence of Lina Joy`s case.
